New modern higher education facility nestles within historic college buildings

Originally the site of 1970s built buttery and kitchens, Newnham College planned to develop new student facilities within their existing campus.

This delicate project involved careful demolition of the original structure, surrounded on three sides by Grade II Listed buildings.

To minimise connection loads on the historic neighbouring buildings, AFP adopted a reinforced concrete frame with floors cantilevered out to meet adjoining walls. We implemented a piled foundation to minimise disturbance to existing buildings and reduce impact on mature tree roots along the avenue.

Sensitive design and construction allowed Newnham College to expand within campus.

“Newnham College have worked with AFP for over 20 years, from refurbishments of college accommodation to new buildings, as well as internal structural alterations and building survey reports.
AFP are assertive and prompt with the delivery of all projects. They have a very pragmatic approach. I always find it a pleasure to work with Paul, who is currently working on our Rare Books Project with very complex detail.”
