Whittle Labs – Department of Engineering

Extension to High Speed laboratory and offices.

The site is located at the gateway to the University West Cambridge site and the clients brief was for a suitably important building to signify the presence of this important research facility.

The high speed laboratory extension comprised of a standard steel portal frame structure wrapped in a curved stainless steel rainscreen cladding system to provide the architectural importance whilst maintaining economy. Extensive secondary steelwork was required to support EOT cranes, louvres and plant.

The separate office extension building was a hybrid structure of loadbearing masonry, precast concrete and steelwork to match the existing building architecturally.
